DIY 1: A simple Christmas wreath

Simple, subtle and super festive. This wreath looks fab wherever it's hung and brings a gentle feeling of good cheer. We used branches of Bittersweet, both for its bright colours and the fact that it's easy to bend. Feel free to use different branches as long as they're flexible enough to work with.

Christmas wreath supplies

  • Bittersweet branch(es) (or another branch that bends easily)
  • Scissors
  • Rope or sturdy wire
  • A spot to hang the wreath

How to make a Christmas wreath: step-by-step plan

  1. Pick a Christmas branch, such as Bittersweet, that you like and that bends easily.
  2. Cut a piece of string or wire ready (to tie the ends of the wreath together later).
  3. Bend the branch into a circle, creating the shape of a wreath.
  4. Secure the ends of the branch together by tying the string or wire around them.
  5. If you'd like to hang the wreath, add an additional piece of string or wire as a hanger if your spot doesn't have one already.
  6. Find a place in your home (on the front door, on the wall above the mantelpiece or over a sconce, for example) or in your outdoor space to hang the wreath, or give it a gift to a loved one.

Tip: instead of hanging the wreath, you could lay it flat instead and use it as a surround for a candle or at the base of a vase.

DIY 2: A mistletoe and dried flower posy that lasts for months

Mistletoe has been a symbol of good luck, protection and love for centuries. An old belief states that if you kiss each other under the mistletoe, you ensure luck, love, peace and fertility. I mean, it can't hurt, right?! Quite apart from superstition, mistletoe brings a touch of magic and romance during the festive season. Check out the supplies and step-by-step plan below for this charming dried flower and mistletoe hanging posy.

Mistletoe posy supplies:

  • Some mistletoe
  • Dried flowers of your choice, or fresh flowers that will dry down well. We used the following: gypsophila, spray rose, skimmia, violas and white ruscus.
  • Pruning shears or secateurs
  • Rope or sturdy wire to tie the flowers and hang the mistletoe with
  • A high place to hang the mistletoe, such as above a doorway, from a rafter or a hook on the wall

How to make a mistletoe bundle: step-by-step plan

  1. Take your mistletoe and cut it to the desired length.
  2. Cut the flowers stem by stem to the desired length and add them to the mistletoe one by one, so the bundle grows gradually in your hands and you can move stems around until it looks how you want.
  3. When satisfied, twist a piece of string around the bouquet and add any other string you need to hang the posy.
  4. Hang the mistletoe and flowers and enjoy your homemade Christmas decoration, or give the mistletoe as a gift to a loved one. Don't forget to pucker up when you're standing nearby!
