Layered botanical motifs
If you’re a more-is-more kind of a person, the floral trend is your new best friend. Flower prints are crying out to be layered. The key is to mix it up with contrasting styles – such as ditzy blossom prints next to blousy, flamboyant blooms. Layer up cushions, furniture upholstery, wallpaper and paintings for the full-on floral experience.
Shower fresh
Remember when everyone started ripping down their shower curtains and replacing them with sleek and shiny shower screens? Only a few plastic floral shower curtains were left languishing in student digs (mildew optional) and granny’s house. Then came the free-standing and claw-foot bath. Now the humble floral shower curtain is back with a bang. An instant dose of pretty for a clinical-looking bathroom.
Preloved petals
Make like author Sarah Moore, who shows how to create a unique look for your home by giving preloved items a new lease of life. Second-hand chairs with vintage charm can be picked up cheaply in junk shops, at markets and online – and then transformed with floral upholstery. Or why not create a vintage gallery of floral paintings in mismatching ornate gilt frames?
Make an entrance
This ingeniously simple but effective idea for a plain wooden staircase requires minimum effort for maximum impact – a spectacular way to make an entrance. Get wallpaper off-cuts for next to nothing from retailers. Choose as many patterns as you like then simply measure the step and cut and paste until every stair is covered.
Warehouse
Exposed brickwork and industrial styling: who doesn’t love the raw beauty of warehouse apartments? But do you really want to feel like you’re going to sleep in a disused factory? Bring a softer edge to the bedroom by contrasting distressed brick and metal finishes with romantic, floral bed linen.
Vintage twist
Ikea might have had great success with their ‘Chuck Out Your Chintz’ campaign back in the 90s. But now Scandi design lovers are cottoning onto the effects of dropping a little bit of Victoriana into the minimalist mix. Pick up an old floor lamp from a vintage supplier. Choose one with ready-faded floral upholstery or reupholster your own with a brand new floral fabric for vintage with a modern twist.
And don't forget the final must-have finishing touch -a HUGE bouquet of fresh flowers!
