Anna Remarchuk captures flowers in envelopes

Snowdrops in the post sparked an idea for a creative project…

Thanks to social media, the only envelopes to drop on most doormats these days are the kind with clear windows on the front, containing demands for money. So you can imagine photographer Anna Remarchuk’s delight when she was sent an envelope of snowdrops through the post as a gift (what we want to know is who they were from!).

Having recently stumbled on a bunch of old envelopes belonging to her great grandfather, the artist had the proverbial light bulb moment. “At the table there were those envelopes. I saw them together and decided to make a photo,” she says. And so the #envelope_series was born.

Anna buys the flowers, or uses “those she receives as gifts” then pairs them with a suitable envelope based on the tone of the paper and the colours and beauty of the blooms. From delicate snowdrops and budding peonies to carefully arranged pansies and branches of cherry blossoms in full bloom, Remarchuk has a knack for choosing the perfect flowers to bring each vintage envelope to life.

Once happy with her carefully constructed arrangement, she then snaps the pairings on her phone and shares them on her Instagram account.

The results are quite beautiful and strangely moving – enough to make you long for the romance of a time when love was expressed in good old-fashioned letters. But then again, if it wasn’t for Instagram…

“During the process I forget about all, because I am in love with what I do,” says Anna. “I want my followers to be able to understand my flowers’ message without any words.”
