Supplies to make a hanging floral sculpture

  • Chicken wire
  • Pruning shears
  • Amaranthus in different colours. We used burgundy and green. Note: Amaranthus is mainly available in late summer and autumn. If it's not available where you are, choose a flower (fresh or dried) based on seasonal availability and your personal preference.
  • Fixing materials, depending on how and where you want to hang your sculpture. These could include screw hooks and string, display wire, nylon thread or thin metal cables.

Tip: preferably, you should choose flowers or branches that stay beautiful when dried out, such as Amaranthus. Read more about dried flowers here and find out how to dry flowers yourself.

How to make a hanging floral artwork

Valentina's tip is to get inspiration for the shape, size and decoration of your artwork beforehand. You can draw inspiration from your surroundings and the place where you want to hang your artwork. The season and your personal flower preferences will also influence the final result.

Step 1

Sketch out the shape of the sculpture you'd like to create by hand. Work with height differences and depth to give your artwork a natural look and three-dimensional effect.

Step 2

Satisfied with your sketch? Then bring out the chicken wire and shape it into the desired shape with your hands.

Step 3

Hang the chicken wire in the spot where you're planning to display your floral work of art. Make sure the structure is strong enough to support your Amaranthus (or the other flower stems or branches you're using). For a light sculpture, thick nylon wire is sufficient. If you're making a heavier display, choose rope or thin metal cables.

Step 4

Collect the flowers you want to use, cut them to different lengths and insert them into the chicken wire one by one. Work in layers and regularly look at your artwork from different angles. That way, you make sure all the flowers are nicely distributed. Trust your feelings and instincts with placement, as this is how you give your artwork a personal touch and expression.

Step 5

Continue arranging your flowers until you've achieved the right look. Satisfied? Then it's time to enjoy your sculpture! Let nature do its work and watch your sculpture slowly dry out. If empty spots appear in the chicken wire as the flowers shrink, add some extra dried flowers to fill the gaps.
