Good intentions: going into the festive season with zest

An Advent wreath is a symbol of hope with four candles, one of which is lit every week during Advent (the four weeks before Christmas). If you think that it could all be a bit more cheerful and friendly, then this modern Christmas wreath is definitely for you: bright colours, a charming appearance and magnificent flowers that will offer you an entirely new festive feeling. 

Celebrate life with flowers and lights

The wreath is round to symbolise the Earth and the candles represent the coming of light. From a Christian perspective this refers to Christmas, but you could also read it as midwinter as from 21 December the days start to get longer again. If you think that the base for this wreath will take you too long to make, then just use a large ring mould.

  • Euphorbia
  • Gypsophila
  • Matricaria
  • 4 Candles
  • Wooden board
  • Jigsaw
  • Wire
  • Staple gun
  • Paper
  • Wood glue
  • Florist’s foam
  • White emulsion
  1. Saw out a round disc with a hole in it to form a base for the wreath.
  2. Cut various lengths of wire and staple them vertically along the edges of the wood, both on the outside and on the inner ring. This creates a rough transparent wreath shape that you can spray or paint white. 
  3. Cover the outside with white paper and wood glue, sticking plastic on the inside.
  4. Insert the candles in the wreath, fill the rest with a layer of florist’s foam so that it falls well below the edge.
  5. Use white emulsion to paint the stems of the craspedia (the yellow globes) white, and allow to dry. 
  6. Distribute flowers across the florist’s foam, inserting the craspedia last.
