Colours and shapes
The Calla lily offers plenty of choice when it comes to colour, as it's available in white, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, green, black and bi-coloured varieties. The most noticeable feature of the flower its beautifully shaped petal-like spathe, that emerges serenely and majestically from the stem. It forms as a kind of wrapper that slowly opens up, revealing the heart of the plant. The actual flowers are very small and are located on the elongated spadix in the centre of the spathe.
Symbolism
Calla lilies are considered to be symbols of purity, sympathy and beauty. The flower is also thought to be lucky, and this meaning dates from the Greek and Roman period. The ancients associated the flower with festivities and enjoyment because the shape of the bloom resembled the goblets they used for drinking. Although many centuries have since passed, the Calla lily has retained this meaning.
Origin
This flower also goes by the name of Zantedeschia. It originates in Africa, and comes from from an area extending from South Africa to Malawi. The areas where it grows alternate between marshland and dry landscape. This means that the flower is not only beautiful, but also very strong.
