Carnival of colour
The Royal Botanic Gardens’ Princess of Wales Conservatory has been transformed into a riot of colour with its stunning display of orchids, bromeliads and tropical plants, creating a sensory journey through the vibrant flora of Brazil – a colourful celebration of the country’s carnival season.
Voyage of discovery
Meander past hanging orchids, through a tunnel of lush, tropical plants and marvel up at two enormous Rainforest Tree structures, bursting with the vivid colours of Oncidiums and Bromeliads. Journey from the Amazon rainforest to the desert of northeastern Brazil to see “glowing, hanging droplets clothed in Tillandsia hanging amongst Brazilian cacti”.
Pond life
A spectacular display of explosive figures will take centre stage in the pond, inspired by the iconic and flamboyant costumes of Brazilian carnival dancers.
Elisa Biondi, Display Horticulturalist says, “This year the pond display will be a true explosion of colour - a real carnival. What we want to do is capture the essence of Brazil, to take visitors on a journey through the biomes of this incredible country, all the while showing the range of conservation and science work that Kew is doing with South America.”
The Orchid Festival runs until 6 March 2016 at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3AB. Admission is included with day entry to the Gardens.
