Recycled vase ideas

Create your own unique flower vases by repurposing objects from around the home

The most unlikely container can be transformed into a thing of beauty with the addition of freshly cut flowers. With a little imagination and some simple upcycling tricks, you can create one-of-a-kind vases that promise to bring out the best in your blooms and bring something that little bit different to your home décor. Here are a few ideas to get you started…

dip dyed jar
Dip-dyed jars

This idea could not be simpler but will have your flower arrangements looking like something straight out of an interiors magazine in a flash.

Take a jam jar and paint the bottom third with acrylic paint in the colour of your choice (neon shades if you want to keep it bang on trend).

Display individually or in a group for maximum impact in your home.

DIY-Lightbulb-Vase
Hanging light bulbs

One of the greatest iconic designs of all time, the classic light bulb is ideal for housing freshly cut flowers.

Cleaning out the light bulb yourself can be a bit tricky (not to mention dangerous) so you could always cheat by buying a decorative bulb that’s ready to go (we won’t tell!).

Display on a table – or suspend the bulbs from the ceiling or against on the wall using ribbon or twine.

Showcase your light bulb vases individually or in a collection as shown.

Crushed cans

When you think of crushed cans, you’re probably more likely to think of littered streets and overflowing dustbins than freshly cut flowers.

But these whimsical, porcelain versions look really rather attractive when filled with flowers. Create your own by cleaning, crushing and spray painting real fizzy drinks cans and adding your favourite blooms.

bowl flower arrangement
Servings bowl display

A large serving bowl or fruit bowl can be transformed into a vase and hold a dramatic display of blooms with this simple but clever trick:

Simply, tape a latticework of masking tape stretching across the top of the bowl and insert your flowers into the grid to create your structure.

Keep the ends of the tape that overlap onto your vase, as short as you can to create a support system that keeps your flowers exactly where you want them.

This technique can be used with almost any vase or bowl.

plastic spoon vase
Plastic spoon art

Who would have thought the humble plastic spoon could be transformed into a beautiful work of art?

The spoon-heads when glued to a base look uncannily like petals or the leaves of an artichoke.

Select your base shape (an old vase or metal can will do) and spray with a primer coat before arranging and gluing your spoon-heads around the outside.
