St Patrick’s Day flower displays

Celebrate the Irish festival with a wreath of green blooms worthy of the Emerald Isle.

The Irish certainly know how to celebrate, so when it comes to commemorating their patron saint, St Patrick, on 17 March, the atmosphere is electric.

St Patrick’s Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland. But over the years, has come to encompass a more general celebration of the heritage and culture of Ireland.

With the Lent restrictions on eating, and drinking alcohol, lifted for the day, the Irish community come out in their droves to celebrate – bedecked in green and accessorised with the national emblem of the shamrock.

Having a St Patrick's themed party?  Why not create your own glorious green St Patrick’s Day wreath for your door or festive table?

Which flowers to choose

Pale green carnations look pretty when teamed with their creamy white counterparts. Green chrysanthemums, on the other hand, add a burst of fresh lime green while peppermint-green roses offer a more subtle hue. Choose variations on the same tones or mix things up for a riot of contrasting shades.

A simple hydrangea wreath

Green hydrangeas are simply stunning and available in an array of beautiful green hues. Go for a uniform colour or contrast brighter green blooms with pale creamy flowers with a subtle hint of yellow-green. Here’s how to make the simplest hydrangea wreath.

Luscious leaves

Incorporate plenty of lush green foliage to add depth to your wreath. Climbing plants such as ivy are ideal for wrapping around your circular structure. Allow them to hang over the edges for a more natural finish. Try adding eucalyptus, tapestry millet, beargrass, and lemon leaf to add some texture to your wreath.

Shamrock wreath

If you can’t get your hands on any shamrock itself, create your own shamrock-shaped wreath, by bending a wire coat hanger into the shape of a shamrock and using this as your base structure.

Tie things up nicely

No wreath is complete without a bow. Green organza or hessian, make a stylish yet natural and rustic finish to your wreath. Tie in a large bow, at the top or bottom (either can work well), but keep it slightly off centre.
